What is Low Vision Clinic?
A low vision clinic helps people whose sight cannot be fully corrected by glasses, surgery or medicine to make the most of the vision they still have, using magnification, lighting and training.
Also known as: Low vision aids · Visual rehabilitation · Magnifier clinic
Being told that nothing more can be done medically is not the end of the process. A great deal can still be done functionally — most people with low vision retain useful sight, and the clinic exists to make that sight work for reading, cooking, mobility and independence.

- Visual field, which determines mobility and safety
- Lighting needs — many patients gain more from a good task lamp than from any device
- Trial of magnification at the level that matches each specific task

For distance tasks such as recognising faces, reading a board or seeing a bus number.
Electronic magnification
Video magnifiers and smartphone-based magnification and text-to-speech, which many patients already own without knowing they can use it this way.

Eccentric viewing training for central field loss, plus guidance for family members on how to help without taking over.
What to expect — step by step
-
1
Understand the goal
We start from what you want to do — read scripture, see grandchildren’s faces, manage your own medicines — not from a chart.
-
2
Functional assessment
Vision, contrast, fields and lighting requirements measured in the context of those tasks.
-
3
Device trial
Several aids are tried with the actual material you brought, at the working distance you will use.
-
4
Training and review
Devices need practice. We teach the technique and review how you are getting on, adjusting as vision or needs change.
Why timing matters
Two things matter here. First, treat the treatable — a person with macular degeneration may also have a cataract, and removing it can still improve their functioning considerably. Second, do not wait until vision has deteriorated further before seeking rehabilitation. Learning to use magnification and eccentric viewing is easier while more vision remains, and the skills carry forward.
Low Vision Clinic — frequently asked questions
Will low vision aids restore my normal vision? +
No. They do not repair the eye. They make the most of the vision that remains, which for most people means getting back specific tasks such as reading and recognising faces.
Is one magnifier enough for everything? +
Rarely. Different tasks need different magnification and working distances. Most people end up using two or three aids for different purposes.
Can a smartphone be used as a low vision aid? +
Very effectively. The camera magnifier, contrast settings, text enlargement and read-aloud features are powerful and cost nothing extra.
Is there any certification or benefit available? +
Patients meeting the statutory criteria may qualify for a disability certificate and associated schemes. We can advise on the documentation and where to apply.
