What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is a laser eye surgery in which a thin flap is raised on the cornea and an excimer laser reshapes the tissue underneath to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.

Also known as: Laser vision correction · Bladeless LASIK · Femto LASIK

LASIK is the fastest-recovering of the spectacle-removal procedures: the treatment itself takes well under a minute per eye, and most patients read the newspaper the next morning without glasses.

Good reasons to consider LASIK

  • A stable spectacle number for at least twelve months
  • Corneal thickness and shape confirmed as normal on topography
  • Age 18 and above, with realistic expectations of the outcome
  • Dry eye that is either absent or already under control
  • No keratoconus, no corneal scarring and no active infection

Powers LASIK typically corrects

  • Myopia — short-sightedness, where distant objects are blurred
  • Hypermetropia — long-sightedness, within a moderate range
  • Astigmatism — cylindrical power that distorts and stretches images
  • A mixture of the above in one or both eyes

Treatment options at Wills Eye

Femtosecond (bladeless) flap

The flap is created by laser rather than a mechanical blade, giving a flap of even, planned thickness — the safer standard we prefer.

Excimer laser ablation

The reshaping itself, taking roughly 10 to 30 seconds per eye depending on the power being corrected.

Eye tracking

The laser tracks small eye movements hundreds of times a second and pauses if you look away, so accuracy does not depend on you holding perfectly still.

What to expect — step by step

  1. 1

    Pre-LASIK screening

The most important appointment. Topography, pachymetry, dilated refraction, tear film and retina evaluation.

  2. 2

    On the day

Numbing drops, a lid holder to stop you blinking, flap creation, laser reshaping, flap repositioned. Around ten minutes in theatre for both eyes.

  3. 3

    First few hours

Watering, mild burning and light sensitivity are normal. Keep the eyes shut and rest — this is the fastest way through it.

  4. 4

    Next morning

Review, vision check and clearance for most normal activity.

Recovery & aftercare

Vision is typically functional the next day and continues to sharpen over two to four weeks. Do not rub the eyes for a month — a fresh flap can be displaced by hard rubbing. Water in the eyes, swimming, dusty travel and eye make-up are avoided for two weeks, and lubricating drops are used for two to three months while corneal nerve sensation recovers.

Why timing matters

LASIK is elective, so timing is yours to choose — but it should follow a stable power, not chase a changing one. Operating on a number that is still moving means treating a target that will have shifted by the time the eye heals. Two consistent refractions a year apart are worth more than any hurry.

LASIK Surgery — frequently asked questions

Is LASIK painful? +

The procedure itself is not — only pressure and light. For four to six hours afterwards the eyes water and burn, which is normal and settles overnight.

How soon can I use a phone or computer? +

Usually from the next day, in short spells with frequent lubricating drops. Long screen sessions in the first week worsen the dryness.

Can LASIK be done if I have dry eyes? +

Mild dryness is treated first and then LASIK is usually fine. Significant, untreated dry eye is a reason to choose a different procedure or to defer.

Is LASIK accepted for defence and police recruitment? +

Several services accept it after a minimum interval since surgery, but the rules differ by force and change over time. Check the current notification for your specific recruitment before booking.

Can LASIK be repeated? +

A touch-up is possible in some eyes if enough corneal thickness remains. This is assessed individually, never assumed.
